SID moves to Lower Beeding A SCHEME to highlight the speed people are travelling through rural areas has been unveiled at Lower Beeding, the latest village to receive training. A Speed Indication Display (SID), which shows a smiley or sad face depending on the speed by which it has passed, has been bought by the Horsham District Crime Disorder Reduction Partnership (HDCDRP) for use in the North Horsham area. This complements an existing SID which is already being used in the southern parishes of the District. Since September 2006 when the HDCDRP took delivery of the second SID, the following communities have come on board with the scheme: Rusper, Warnham, Broadbridge Heath, Rudgwick and Southwater, North Horsham, Forest and Trafalgar (both are in Horsham).
The scheme is being staffed by volunteers from the community and is designed to proactively assist with the reduction in speed related issues by being a highly visible presence on the road side. Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) Jo Garner from Sussex Police, who covers Lower Beeding parish, has been aware of local residents' concerns regarding speeding. She said: "SID will give residents a chance to see for themselves how much of an issue they have with regards to speeding. "From that they will be able to decide what, if any, courses of action they wish to take." PCSO Jeff Grant (SID Co-ordinator) from Sussex Police said: "Should anyone wish to become a volunteer and help their community by sparing some time to help run SID, please contact your local parish, neighbourhood council or PCSO." The Horsham District Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership's Greg Charman said: "We are very pleased SID is now being widely used across the District. Speed is the biggest factor in serious accidents and we hope this scheme will further remind speeding motorists to slow down. "Few people realise you are three times more likely to die in a car crash on a rural road. "Sticking to the speed limit it vastly reduces the chances of an accident."
